All City Street Art Block Party

Last week All City (the international street art app) and Factory Fresh (an art gallery located in Brooklyn) put together a slammin’ block party that went into the night. Graffiti and street artists such as Chris Stain, Gaia, Skewville, Imminent Disaster and members of UK’s Burning Candy crew were in attendance and painted on a 200 foot wall on Vandervoort Place deep in the heart of Bushwick. A DJ spun some funky tunes and a Calexico taco cart was there as well, providing tacos and burritos for everybody’s belly. I’ll take a rain check on the carne asada! By the time it got dark, most of the artists were putting the finishing touches on their pieces. Inside Factory Fresh, there was art on display by local street artists as well as yummy, hot apple cider and a preview screening of DOTS a documentary about London’s graffiti crew, Burning Candy. The movie, so far, follows BC member CYCLOPS on his trip to India to meet the artists who haindpaint the street signs there. He meets many of the locals and eventually collaborates and creates with the artists whom he finds inspirational. The premise of the movie is to follow all the members of the crew to different locations as they travel to the home of the art which inspired them. The film is not complete and the event also served as a way to promote the project and hopefully gain financial support for the film. For more info on their funding plan check out the DOTS website if you are interested in hopping on board by purchasing some art and becoming a co-producer. The film is ambitious and so far, looks excellent and it definitely deserves to be seen. Factory Fresh plans on having more events in the future in the hopes of transforming Vandervoort Place into The Bushwick Art Park where street art and sculptures could be on display in a safe environment for the artists and the community.

WNEW Channel 5: DRIVE IN MOVIE (1981-1988)

drive in movie

Where were you in the mid 1980’s on a saturday afternoon at 3pm in the New York City area? I know that this young martian(me) had a reoccurring date with the tube on WNEW CHANNEL 5’s DRIVE IN MOVIE at 3pm every Saturday as some of you Gen X robots probably had as well! This kung fu theatre of awesomeness with an occassional sprinkling of hammer horror flicks spearheaded my love for anything chopsocky, vampires, & frankenstein related goodness!
I can still remember it like it was yesterday. Every weekend from 1983 till about 1987, I would work at my pops ghetto fabulous chinese take out resto in south orange-NJ close to the campus of Seton Hall University & not very far from the urban moshpit of Newark & Irvington. This “Cream of Sum young” robot would work his tail off all in the name of family survival but, come 3-5pm on Saturdays I would gently lay down my chinese cleaver, simmer down the boil to the egg foo young gravy, & set aside the WOK utensils to focus in on WNEW’s Channel 5 drive in movie! I was already watching plenty of revolutionary Hong Kong action films at the time with the likes of a young Jackie Chan, Sammo, Chow Yun Fat, Simon Yam, & Anthony Wong, but something about these period piece films from the Shaw Brothers really sucked me in to the vortex. The Venom’s Mob, Gordon Liu, Chang Cheh the Director, Lau Kar Leung & many others from the shaw brother studios were on top of their game in terms of storytelling, martial arts choreography, costume, & set design. It seems like the 70’s & 80’s were the golden era for period piece traditional kung fu films & the mid 80’s to 90’s were all about modern no holds barred Hong Kong action! Getting back to the Drive In Movies, I had come across some treasures of information regarding the programming of WNEW’s Drive in Movies since its birth from May of 1981 to July of 1988 thanks to a great article by CHRIS POGGIALI crediting native new yorker & movie distributor, MEL MARON on orchestrating the movement for getting these kung fu movies out of the grindhouses & into our local TV station for playback!: http://www.dvddrive-in.com/TV%20Guide/driveinmovie5.htm
In honor of WNEW’s Channel 5 Drive in movie programming, Planet Chocko will write a movie review on a previous shown film on channel 5’s DRIVE IN MOVIE every Saturday set to post around 3pm EST to PLANET CHOCKO ZINE! Stay Tuned! Check out a list of the original programming of WNEW’s Channel 5 DRIVE IN MOVIE below:

Dar Williams at Housing Works(pic by Mr. C)

DAR WILLIAMS took it back to her acoustic coffee house roots by playing a 5 song set *Free* at HOUSING WORKS BOOKSTORE-CAFE in Soho on Saturday 10/16! More importantly though, her appearance was about showing support for HOUSING WORKS & their mission to fight homelessness & battling AIDS/HIV in NYC. DAR was gracious enough to volunteer at the Cafe serving coffee & playing a casual acoustic set much to the delight of her fans! She ended up playing 5 songs including THE EASY WAY, IOWA, THE BLESSINGS, THE BABYSITTER’s HERE, & a very beautiful song called YOU RISE AND MEET THE DAY! DAR also stayed around to meet & greet her fans after her set before volunteering at the cafe! She happily signed anything you presented to her. She was selling her latest 2 disc CD compilation MANY GREAT COMPANIONS. All proceeds of her CD sales went directly to HOUSING WORKS! If you ladies, martians, & tri-state freaks have never been to Housing Works Bookstore & Cafe, then…you DEFINITELY know what to do! The Bookstore has a great selection of books both new, but mostly used. They also have a good selection of used CDs, vinyls, & comic books. The bookstore also plays host to numerous music, literary, & comedic events. Suzanne Vega will be playing at Housing Works on 11/14 which I’m totally stoked for! The cafe also provides a good brew to satisfy your caffeine needs for the day! In the summer, I often find myself dashing into Housing Works for a nice refreshing iced coffee & some pastries before combing the streets again! ALL workers at HOUSING WORKS BOOKSTORE-CAFE are volunteers. All sales & proceeds of the bookstore cafe go right back into to the Housing Works mission! Remember, HOUSING is a NOT for profit organization. Represent, y’all! This joint bleeds NYC…straightup! One last verse before I go…It’s from Dar Williams’ song THE BABYSITTER’s HERE..”Tonight was just great, she taught us the sign for peace”. Check out a few vids I took from Dar performance below…

KNITTING IS FOR PUSSIES exhibit by Polish artist: OLEK

I went to a really cool exhibit called KNITTING IS FOR PUSSIES at the Christopher Henry Gallery on Elizabeth St. on the outskirts of Chinatown/Little Italy. The Polish Artist OLEK was responsible for bombing a living space with YARN! Literally & figuratively! Even the rug & walls were adorned in yarn! I first caught wind of her yarn encased bicycle chained to a pole in the east village in the summer & wondered who was responsible for this neat creation! Unfortunately, today is the last day of the exhibit at this gallery, but I’m sure she’ll resurface again in the East Village. ALL her work is available for PURCHASE! Without further ado…AND please take your shoes off when entering the exhibit!

Cover me with YARN in NYC!

Just lollygagging around manhatty like I usually do & ran into a few cool subjects embossed in YARN! The volkswagen was parked outside of the Christopher Henry Gallery on Elizabeth Street between Grand & Broome. The yarn bicycle was chained to a street sign on Elizabeth & Broome, a half block away from the volkswagen. And last but, not least the baby yarn bike was on the center island chained to a street sign on the Bowery & Delancey/Kenmare Street intersection! I hope the artist doesn’t have to move the Yarn Volkswagen due to alternate side parking!

After doing a little bit of research, the Polish artist “OLEK” is responsible for these cool yarn creations! Her beautiful pieces of street yarn art is a dog & pony show to promote her new exhibit called KNITTING IS FOR PUSSIES at the Christopher Henry Gallery at 127 Elizabeth Street. Check it out y’all, the exihibit is running till this weekend Oct. 17!

THE EYE OF THE STORM: JANE ELLIOTT'S class exercise in 1968

eyestorm

Mr. C has been wanting to share an eye opening exercise that Jane Elliott conducted for her 3rd grade class in Iowa in 1968. This class experiment was commonly known as the brown eyed-blue eyed exercise which was meant to simulate & demonstrate the harshness of our society with the way we mistreat people who look different which was supervised in an elementary school setting by Mrs. Elliott. This class experiment was eventually made into a documentary called “The Eye of the Storm”. It was a daring lesson that would slap the school children in the face with discrimination that they had never experienced before & hopefully, would change their thinking on understanding & appreciating people of different colors, regardless of planet associations, star alignment, & cultures. Some of you martians might have seen this in college during social studies, teacher education, or psych class, but if you haven’t, I recommend taking 30 minutes away from watching that porn to watch this lesson from Jane Elliot from 1968! I first witnessed this brown eyed-blue eyed lesson plan when I showed this film in 16mm format to a psychology class when I worked at the college media center when attending the same college. I ran into it again recently on PBS when perusing through their website & remembered how mind blowing it was. The rediscovery of this study slapped me in the face once again & it was awe inspiring! No matter if it’s in the 1960’s,the new millenium, planetchocko’s stoneage, or the Jetson’s era, everyone can learn from this, & ought to learn from this. Mrs. Elliott & The Eye of the Storm documentary, schools this 3rd grade class in Iowa, the same set of students again 14 years later, & yet again to adults in a mixed environment. TAKE the TIME to watch it on PBS via the web here:

It might change your view of the world & how we treat people if you’ve been living under a rock or been away at Mars like we have for a while.

Smoked Sausage...up close & personal!

The 8th annual Big Apple BBQ block party in NYC was a swine of a success this past weekend! BBQ lovers of all breeds & nations conjured up at Madison Square Park’s perimeter to sample a tasting of some of the best slow smoked whole hog, brisket, sausages, & ribs from pitmasters all across the red, white,& blue! The vendors that I had a privilege to sample from included Ed Mitchell’s “The Pit” from Raleigh-North Carolina serving up a whole hog sandwich with slaw, Mike Mill’s “17th st. bar & grill” from Murphysboro-Illinois serving baby back ribs with beans, Patrick Martin’s “Martins BBQ Joint” from Nashville-Tennesse serving up a whole hog sandwich with sweet pickles, Drew Robinson’s “Jim n Nicks BBQ” from Birmingham-Alabama serving homemade smoked sausage with an jalapeno pimento cheese spread, Ken Bosley’s “Moonlite BBQ Inn” from Owensboro-Kentucky serving a BBQ mutton & burgoo sandwich with pickles, & Joe Duncan’s “Bakers Ribs” from Dallas Texas serving up St. Louis style ribs. There were oodles of other pitmasters & their respective restaurants from near to far but the ones I mentioned above are the ones that served up the BBQ that ended up in my tummy! Everything I tasted from these BBQ masters were truly “off the meat rack” to say the least! I have to say that my favorites were the whole hog sandwich from Martins BBQ Joint & the smoked sausage from Jim n Nicks BBQ. The whole hog sandwich from Ed Mitchell was off the chain, too with the vinegary based mix of the finely chopped whole hog, but I preferred the roughly chopped whole hog from Martin’s BBQ joint & the sweet/tart blend of the BBQ sauce slightly lathered upon the stringily-coursely chopped meat! The sweet pickles that accompanied the whole hog ‘sammy were very delightful, too! The 2nd delight that I really savored were the homemade smoked sausage from Jim N Nick’s BBQ. I thought the sausage had a nice & mild smoke flavor that wasn’t too overpowering while the casing had a nice snap when your teeth broke the bond! The accompaniment with the smoked sausage, the pimento cheese spread was a nice element of surprise as well. The cheese were finely diced & the jalapeno added a hint of smoke & heat that was just right! I gently massaged the smoked sausage with the jalapeno-pimento cheese spread instead of smearing it on the saltine crackers that they provided & ooh,boy that combo was like a 1st round lottery draft pick! The snap, crackle, pop of the casing with the smoke flavor of the sausage & the texture of the pimento cheese spread were pure ecstacy to my taste buds when my molars layed contact on her! Ed Mitchell’s crew from “The Pit” also won my piggy heart when they gave free samplings of their pork cracklings when politely asked! Some tasty pork rinds I must say! It brought me back to the days of high school to this corner store called “The Caribbean” when pork rinds & a snapple were a snack called to order before practice! Ed Mitchell’s,’The PIT’ was so popular that they ran out of hog sandwiches around 1:45pm on Saturday! I hope to try out more vendors next year & continue to go to the ones that really pleased my senses this year!

Planet Chocko attended an interesting panel discussion at Studio X on Varick St. just below Houston called “Foodprints NYC” which is a free series of conversations with invited special guests to speak on food in our city regarding topics like clustering of bodegas, analysis of fast food & alcohol advertising in the inner city, slow foods, zoning for street vendors, green markets & sustainability, & many other topics regarding the foodscapes in NYC. I walked into the middle of a discussion with the guests talking about the irony & lunacy of more strict regulations being set on families applying & receiving foodstamps when the actual corruption of welfare aid from the government is laden with guilty hands from the puppets that actually create these amendments to begin with. The conversation then turned the page to talking about the poisoning of fast food culture into our psyche. One ‘conservative’ guest talked about putting an extra tax on fried chicken. Fried chicken, cigarettes, & booze are poisoning our bodies, he says! My tongue & heart dropped when I heard this. No!, not fried chicken! Thoughts of Sylvia’s, Charles’ country fried pan chicken, Pluck U, & Bon Chon quickly raced through my mind! The next panel discussion encompassed guests Jonathan Bogarin, Makalé Faber Cullen, David Haskell, & Naa Oyo A. Kwate. Jonathan Bogarin was born & raised in New York as an artist & educator. His palate of works include paintings & a recent film called “Bodega Down Bronx” ,a 29-minute video that investigates New York City’s bodegas in terms of their owners, suppliers, inventory, clientele, and more. He talked about the thriving culture of the NYC bodega despite having floods of similar stores in the same neighborhood & more than not, on the same block. Every bodega has their own rash followings of convenience whether patrons erupt from a certain housing project, a school, being located close to a subway or bus stop or perhaps having special products such as plantains, goya products, and herbs specific to a certain ethnicity. The majority of owners of NYC bodegas are of Dominican, Middle Eastern, & Puerto Rican descent. Next to speak was Makalé Faber Cullen. She is a cultural anthropologist and contributor to Renewing America’s Food Traditions: Saving and Savoring the Continent’s Most Endangered Foods. She discussed the rise & support of the green markets in NYC including the thriving farmers market in Greenpoint, Bronx, & Queens. The main objective in Makale’s soliloquy was about educating the masses with slow foods, sustainability, & support of the local farmers to make it worth their while to make the trek from upstate NY to the urban thralls of NYC. Next on deck was David Haskell. He is a Senior Editor of New York Magazine & is a co-founder of the East Williamsburg, Brooklyn based distillery called Kings County Distillery. Kings County churns out country style moonshine, bourbon, & whiskey similar to the tradition of Kentucky. Yeehaw & don’t forget to tip that cow! Kings County Distillery is located in the heart of hipster infected East Williamsburg, Brooklyn! David discusses how backwards thinking the local laws & regulations of NYC are with erecting his distillery business. The City of New York seems to be more obsessed about the locale of the distillery, zoning location away from schools, & ferociously rabid about the particular locks that his distillery should be infested with. Apparently, the city of New York cares less of what is in the spirits. Man!, this would make Uncle Jessie, Boss Hog, & Cooter one happy sons of Boar’s nest! Rocket fuel, rubbing alcohol, everclear, Kings County Distillery, we have lift off! The final guest to the podium was Naa Oyo Kwate. She is an assistant professor of Sociomedical Sciences at the Mailman School of Public Health, Columbia University. She led an interesting discussion about the strategic locations of fast food restaurants & billboards. Her research led to the results that NYC is one of the most segregated cities in the nation. Naa Oyo, also came to the conclusion that black & latino neighborhoods, no matter poor, middle class, or affluent would always contain the most franchised fast food enclaves than their white counterparts. Billboard advertisements of the alcohol & fast food nation variety would also come to the same conclusion.

All in all, Foodprints NYC provided an excellent forum in discussing the food escapades of our City & how we can sustain it for the future by educating ourselves. Planet Chocko hopes that we, martians & earthlings alike will open up our minds to settle our differences so that we can bridge the gap to achieve one goal, to live in a more healthy, natural environment both mentally & physically.

CHINATOWN!

Ladies of C-Town with an early Sunday morning workout at Columbus Park

Ladies of C-Town with an early Sunday morning workout at Columbus Park

Recent closings of two well established businesses in Chinatown-NYC most notably Jan Lee’s, Sinotique on 19 Mott Street & Mr. Tang’s, a restaurant on the corner of Mott & Bayard Street has once again reminded us about the day in the life of a small business owner in NYC especially in the lower manhattan area. Probably, a more accurate coined phrase would be a “day in the death of a small business owner”. It does not help that the 9-11 trials for the accused masterminds of the World Trade Center plot will be taking place across the street from Columbus Park in Chinatown with the locals fearing street closures, added armed security presence, & protestors will drive out foot traffic in C-Town. We’ve seen what the closing of Park Row has done to the community.
Sinotique is an asian inspired furniture-home accessories-jewelry dealer & importer that has been in the Chinatown family for decades. The Lee family has been a great supporter & advocate of the lower east chinese side of manhattan for years. Fortunately, the Lee’s have re-invented themselves by moving their base to Brooklyn.
Mr. Tang’s is a restaurant on the busy corner of Mott & Bayard which will be heavily missed. Some notables such as Russell Wong & Jackie Chan have been sighted as customers. Mr. Tang’s has also been a host for photo & movie shoots. The most recent movie that I can remember being filmed there was “Year of the Fish”. Then again , “Year of the Fish” was a cinderella tale based in New York’s Chinatown so they were filming everywhere in C-Town!
Go support your local Chinatown! Chinese New year should be extraordinarily festive this season because it’s the Year of the Tiger in 2010! Mark February 14, 2010 & the following weekend of Feb. 20 & 21st on the calendar to visit Chinatown-NYC! It’s going to be a blast with the Chinese New Year Parade march through Mott Street & the impromptu Lion Dancing throughout the streets by the “organizations” & local Kung Fu Schools in the NYC area! Have some dim sum while you are there! See some dim sum suggestions below…
